COURSE CONTENT
- Introduction: Resources and Need for Water Desalination, Classification of Industrial Desalination Processes, Composition of seawater.
- Single Effect Evaporation: Thermal, Mechanical and Absorption Vapor Compression, Effect of boiling temperature and salinity on performance ratio and heat transfer area.
- Multiple Effect Evaporation: Forward, Backward and Parallel Feed Arrangements, Specific cooling water flowrate, Specific pumping power, Variation in the performance ratio as a function of top brine temperature and the number of effects.
- Multi-stage Flash (MSF) Distillation: MSF system components: Brine pool. Demister, Distillate tray, condenser / preheater tubes, Tube configurations, One through MSF, Brine recycle MSF.
- Solar Desalination: Direct and Indirect Solar Desalination, Basin Stills, Diffusion Stills, Multiple-effect basin still, Externally heated (active) solar still, Desalination with humidification–dehumidification.
